About the Artist

Maria-Vittoria Filippini, born in Vezzano Ligure, Italy, grew up studying and painting. Winner of a prestigious Gold Medal National Prize at the age of 16, her professional career as an artist began with her work exhibited for 40 days at the Royal Palace of Monza, Italy.

Having painted and exhibited in Venice, London and Hong Kong, Filippini returned to Italy after 23 years living abroad and now resides in Lerici, Italy.

Initially working for many years as a portrait artist, specifically in London, her work has continued to develop and evolve through various styles over the years.

Whilst living in Venice, Filippini’s works were mostly monochromatic  in style, but after 15 years in Asia, have been enriched with colour, principally inspired by the violent light of the tropics, the lucid native vegetation and migrations of birds, all of which have increasingly featured in her canvas’s.

Returned to her native Ligurian Sea, the colours of her paintings now reflect and convey the tones and shades of the Ligurian land and sea.

An Artist suspended between dream and reality, her reinterpretations of landscapes and maternity (another pertinent theme throughout her works) all contain elements of amazement, power and joy, influenced by an admiration and profound respect for creation.

Filippini’s paintings are developed over the course of many months, at times having been completed over the course of years. Constructed layer by layer, with a strong focus on chromatic balance and movement, her paintings all share a consistent dream-like theme. Like dreams, they take liberty to overturn and embellish, filter and escape from reality.
